Indiana has a great selection of affordable health insurance plans. On average, you can expect to pay $437 a month for a full coverage health plan if you live in Indiana, but rates start around $370 a month, and most have the option to add dental and vision plans, as well. Dental add-ons generally cost around $45 a month and vision start as low as $12. Some residents even qualify for free health insurance! Rates and coverage are all determined by your specific needs, and your age, health, and household size all factor into your premiums. That means it’s important to shop around for a plan that works for you.

How to Enroll in Health Insurance in Indiana
Indiana Health Insurance Companies
Indiana has several affordable health insurance options. Two of the biggest companies offering local plans are:
CareSource
CareSource offers plans in every county in Indiana. They offer several plans under each of the metal tiers, so there are plenty of options.
The comprehensive, high-quality coverage offered by CareSource plans is affordable, clear, and easy to use. They provide family and individual plans with optional adult dental and vision coverage.
Some of their benefits include ActiveFit, a program that gives members access to several local fitness centers. They also offer a provider network for hearing coverage called TruHearing. This is included in every plan.
Celtic Insurance Company
All 92 counties in Indiana are covered by Celtic Insurance Company. The Celtic Basic health insurance plan, which includes low premiums and the option for a higher deductible, is the most reasonably priced health insurance offered by Celtic Insurance Company. Given that it covers preventive care, prescription drugs, and a healthy living benefit program, this is a fantastic plan option.
Health Insurance Marketplace in Indiana
If you’re looking for health insurance in Indiana, a great place to start is the health insurance Marketplace. Marketplace health insurance, which was created by the Affordable Care Act, offers certain consumer protections, guarantees coverage for pre-existing conditions, and includes coverage for what are known as the “10 essential health benefits”:
- Ambulatory patient services (outpatient care)
- Emergency services
- Hospitalization
- Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care (both before and after birth)
- Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment (including counseling and psychotherapy)
- Prescription drugs
- Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
- Laboratory services
- Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
- Pediatric services, including oral and vision care (but adult dental and vision coverage aren’t essential health benefits)
Each of the ACA-compliant plans offered on the Marketplace is described by metal tiers: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. These tiers do not signal a difference in quality of care, though. The tiers differ in your out-of-pocket costs versus what your plan covers.
It’s important to remember that the Marketplace only offers the plans of participating providers. So unfortunately, while the Marketplace is a great tool, you may not be able to compare every plan available to you.
Whether you want a Marketplace plan, or a plan from a private insurer, an EZ agent can help. We work with all carriers in your state to compare all options available.
Over half of the uninsured in Indiana who qualify for Marketplace insurance coverage could get a Bronze plan for FREE.
Indiana’s Short Term Health Insurance Guidelines
If you’ve missed the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) or need health insurance for a short amount of time, short-term plans are a great option. It’s important to note, though, that these policies tend to only cover the basics, and you can be denied one of these plans if you have a pre-existing condition.
There are some rules around short-term plans, though, both at the federal and the state level. States can make their own rules, but Indiana follows the federal guidelines for short-term health insurance plans. This means you can purchase a plan for an initial term of 364 days, and then you have the option to renew up to 3 times, giving you a maximum of just under 3 years of coverage. You can also choose to buy a new plan once your original plan expires.
Indiana Health Insurance Resources
Using resources available to you can help you find great health insurance. One of the resources available to you is actually your employer, so ask them if they offer a healthcare plan. Even though there are no laws in Indiana requiring employers to offer health insurance, many still do. These plans tend to be cheaper than individual plans, because your employer gets discounts for purchasing group plans.
Another great resource is using the federally run Health Insurance Marketplace. Indiana was one of the states that chose not to take funding to create their own exchange, so you can use the federal one to shop plans available to you.
On the Marketplace, you can also find out if you qualify for a government-funded program. Medicare offers health insurance to residents 65 and older, or adults living with a qualifying disability. Medicaid offers low-income families cheap or often free health insurance plans.
You can also choose to work with an agent. Agents can help you compare all of your options on and off the Marketplace and will make sure your plan covers all of your medical needs.

How to Get the Most Savings
Across all 50 states, Indiana ranks 18th most expensive in terms of healthcare spending per capita. The average amount spent on an individual’s healthcare for the year is $9,914 in Indiana. With a price tag like that, it’s important to save money where you can.
Taking care of your health is a big way to save money. Health insurance companies consider your body mass index (BMI) when assessing your risk. If you’re among the 35.5% of adults in Indiana who are considered obese, it’s important to know that staying in a healthy BMI range helps keep your premiums low.
Another health risk that insurance companies consider is smoking or other forms of tobacco use. In fact, smoking cigarettes can raise your premiums by 50%! 17.3% of adults in Indiana are smokers, so if you’re among them, consider quitting so you can lower your rates and help keep yourself healthy.
Another way to save is by working with an insurance agent. Agents can find a plan that fits your budget and can apply any local discounts you qualify for to your plan. In fact, an EZ agent can save you hundreds of dollars a year. And all of our services are free to use and have no obligation.
